Representative Facilities

Water tanks in the laboratory

  • Small Towing Tank with Wave Maker and Water Circulation

It is a wave-making circulation towing tank with a length of about 6 m, a width of about 1 m, and a depth of about 50 cm. We also have a towing trolley for towing models of ships and marine structures at a maximum speed of about 1 m / s. Waves with a maximum height of about 5 cm and flow with a maximum velocity of about 5 cm / s can be generated. We are conducting proof-of-concept experiments by creating models of ships and marine structures with a scale ratio of about 1/100. It is used to create new ideas and confirm the feasibility before conducting experiments in IIS Ocean Engineering Basin and Horizontal Circulating Water Channel with Wave Maker and Wind Tunnel or sea trial.

  • Rotating Table Tank

    Rotating Table Tank

This is a rotating table tank with a diameter of 2 m. There is a place to attach the video camera at the top. The purpose of this tank is to carry out experiments to reproduce the flow fields of lakes and coastal areas that are affected by the rotation of the earth. By rotating the model with the table and observing it with a video camera fixed to the rotating water tank, it is possible to create a situation for humans to observe water current on the rotating earth. In other words, it is possible to carry out experiments that take into account the effects of the earth's rotation.

Water tanks in Research and Testing Complex II

  • IIS Ocean Engineering Basin

    IIS Ocean Engineering Basin

IIS Ocean Engineering Basin has a dimension of a length of 50m, a width of 10m, and a depth of 5m, and can generate waves, flows, and winds. It is installed inside Research and Testing Complex II. The maximum speed of the towing trolley is 2m/s. The wave generator can create multi-directional waves, regular waves, and irregular waves with a wave period of 0.5 to 5 seconds and a maximum wave height of 0.3 m (wave period of 2 seconds). The maximum flow velocity is about 0.2 m/s at the center of the water tank. A maximum wind speed of 10 m/s can be generated from the blower trolley. A movable floor with a length of 20m and a width of 10m is installed near the center of the basin, and the water depth can be changed in the range of 0 to 5m.

  • Horizontal Circulating Water Channel with Wave Maker and Wind Tunnel

Horizontal Circulating Water Channel with Wave Maker and Wind Tunnel

Horizontal Circulating Water Channel with Wave Maker and Wind Tunnel has a dimension of a width of 1.8m and a depth of 1m, and can generate waves, flows, and wind. It is installed inside Research and Testing Complex II. It can create a faster flow than IIS Ocean Engineering Basin, and the maximum flow velocity is 1.5 m/s in the forward direction and 0.8 m/s in the reverse direction. The wave generator can create regular and irregular waves with a maximum wave height of 0.2 m and a wave period of 0.5 to 2.2 seconds. The maximum wind speed is 15m/s.

Others

We have the equipments (load cells, motion capture, etc.) for water tank testing, and the equipments (wave and current profiler, temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen meters, chlorophyll a meters, depth meters, underwater load cell, etc.) for field investigation. Also we have several computers for numerical simulation.
